Uttarakhand, India

Uttarakhand received its name just recently – in 01 January 2007. The name comes from the Sanskrit words “uttara” meaning “north” and “khanda” meaning “land”. If we need to translate the name Uttarakhand, it will be “The Land in the North”. This it is. Uttarakhand is a state situated in the northern part of India occupying a southern part of the Himalayas – some 53,483 square kilometers. The northern part of the state is covered with the mountain peaks and glaciers of the Himalayan mountain range. Another common referral to Uttarkhand is “Land of the Gods”. The reason for this, are the many Hindu temples and pilgrimage sites all through the land. Two of the most important rivers for Hinduism spring from the Himalayan glaciers in the region – the River Ganges and the River Yamuna. These two, together with the holy towns of Badrinath and Kedarnath form the Chota Char Dham or “The Small Circuit of Four Abodes” – one of the important pilgrimage destinations for the Hindus. Archaeologists have proved, studying stone paintings, rock shelters and stone tools that the state was populated since prehistoric times. Today, it ranks 19th in India with a population of 10,116,752, as per the 2011 census. Uttarakhand is divided into two regions – Kumaon to the South and Garhwal to the North.
