Titwala Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir, Thane, Maharashtra, India

Titwala Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir, Titwala, Thane Dist., Maharashtra.

Titwala Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir also known as Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati Temple is an ancient temple dating back to 11th Century bearing the architecture of Hemadpanti style. According to legend, Titwala village was part of Dandakaranya forest where Rishi Kanva had his hermitage. Kanva was the author of several hymns of the vedic scripture Rigveda and one of the Angirasas. He had an adopted daughter Shakuntala who was abandoned immediately after her birth by her parents, sage Vishwamitra and the celestial dancer Menaka. Shakuntala’s story has been narrated in the Hindu epic Mahabharata and dramatised by the poet Kalidasa, considered the greatest poet and dramatist in Sanskrit language. The Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati temple built by Sage Kanva in ancient times was submerged under a tank. During the rule of the Peshwa Madhavrao the first, the tank was emptied and de-silted to provide drinking water to the town to resolve the drought situation. It was during the de-silting operations that the temple was found buried. The idol of god Ganesha was found buried in the silt by Peshwa sardar Ramchandra Mehendale. Soon thereafter, the renovation of the temple was undertaken and a stone temple was built. This is most revered pilgrimage site for Hindus. Devotees from all over Maharashtra come to Titwala to visit this temple. The area is very crowded during the Sankasthi chturthi, Maghi Chaturthi and Ganesh Chaturthi. The pilgrims can reach here through Titwala station which is one of the station in central railway. Near the temple there is a beautiful pond where boating is offered for recreation. Along side the lake, there is a peripheral lawn where amphitheatre has been created. The Mandir is open from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
