The Saraighat Bridge is a the reason why Guwahati is said to be the Gateway to the Northeast. The bridge was built with a view to connect the Northeastern region with rest of India. It was the first bridge built over the river Brahmaputra that has completed 50 years in the year 2008. It has a length of 1,492 m (4,895 ft) and ranks among the longest bridges above water in India. The bridge was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1963. It is a majestic road cum rail bridge that is today maintained by the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway. The view of the unfathomable Brahmaputra from the Saraighat Bridge is quite breathtaking. Stand in between the bridge and look at the river flowing and you will never be able to erase this sight from your mind. Guwahati: - Guwahati is the largest City in the state of Assam. It is one of the major riverine port cities and the city is undergoing a mad surge of developments these days. The city acts as a gateway to the northeastern India. The city acts as the starting block for most itineraries of the northeast. Guwahati is a prosaic heap of glass and concrete for the most part but there are sprinkles of interesting temples are and monuments to explore during the stay. One can salvage a generous amount of the traditional local flavor which lingers amidst the suburban ponds, small single storey houses, palm trees, and old colonial-era mansions.
